Social workers can be racist, oppressive, microaggressive, misogynistic, homophobic, and everything in between. I've had too many clients share their horrible therapy experiences where their former provider belittled, minimized, or retraumatized. Just because you carry the social work title doesn't mean you're above critique.⁠

Separating behaviors & experiences from identity is essential in healing. Unpacking this takes time, but creating a safe therapy space allows clients to explore these beliefs and process them.⁠

I don't think I can say it enough, but ALWAYS ask about suicidal thoughts and self harm. Talking about it means you can safety plan & provide someone with resources & support they didn't know were out there!⁠

Human beings are complex and SO much impacts one's identity and experience. This only touches the surface. What other aspects of culture come into play with your clients?⁠

Trauma-informed care is SO important for all clients. Clients may not initially feel comfortable disclosing trauma & discrimination, so treating everyone with trauma-informed practice is a must!⁠

Building a support system is also an essential part of therapy! Whether is referring a client to a support group or the client getting involved in a community organization, volunteering, or hobby group!.⁠
